Don’t land the train’s coming

One of the few airports where the railway tracks run through the runway. The air traffic control tower has a real problem – stop the train or maybe give the pilot an order “don’t land, the train is going!
Gisborn Airport is a small airport located on the western outskirts of Gisborne on the North Island of New Zealand. There are regional and domestic flights operated here – all of them close to 60 daily. Every year more than one and a half million passengers decide to come and go from this place. The 160 hectare airport consists of three grassy runways and one main runway that deserves special attention.
It’s all thanks to a railway line that crosses the runway right in the middle of the Palmerston North – Gisborne route. There are few such airports around the world and most of them have decided to close down the railway traffic. Here, trains run from the early hours of the morning to the very evening. For the airport authorities it is quite problematic to manage traffic on the runway – stop trains and indicate the moment of departure of the plane.
