deadly dangerous place

All we can say about the reptiles themselves is that the venom of one of them can kill two adults at once. The island is inhabited by an endemic species of woody snakes with a golden skin colour of the island’s embers (Bothrops insularis). Their average length they can reach is 70 cm, the maximum length they can observe is 118 cm. Their deadly venom has caused no mammal to be here, but the lush vegetation attracts a huge number of birds, which become food for snakes. According to the Brazilian population, there are five snakes per square metre, but the Discovery Channel document speaks of one individual per square metre. Since there is no other habitat for this type of snake, it is considered to be in danger of extinction by fire. However, about 50 new snakes are born here every year.
Of course, as it usually happens with such places, local legends appear over time. There are two of them. The first one tells the story of a lonely fisherman who unwittingly went to Queimada Grande to collect some bananas. A few moments on the shore were enough to bite him instantly, but he managed to get back to his boat. However, the fast-acting venom caused him to die. He was found drifting in a huge puddle of blood in a boat a few days later, and the second tells of the bloody death of the last lighthouse operator and his family. One night several snakes were to enter through windows and attack a man, his wife and three children. They tried to escape into the boat, but the snakes hanging from the branches injected so much venom into them that they died before they reached the shore. These stories may never have happened, but they make it impossible for a healthy minded man to appear without compulsion.
