Good watermelon or which one How to choose a ripe fruit

Refreshing, sweet and full of valuable nutrients – such is the watermelon, which in its various forms is an ideal idea for tasty and easily digestible cooling during hot summer days. In order to take full advantage of its health benefits, it is worth checking every fruit well before buying it. So how to choose watermelons to avoid those too watery, spongy flesh and fuzzy taste? Let’s see some tips to make your fruit a great addition to salads, cocktails and home-made ice cream.
This large, pumpkin plant with a dark green stripe skin and an intense red middle really comes from South America, where it still grows outside the plantations. Watermelons are now mainly grown in Italy, Spain and Hungary, but are popular throughout Europe. It has been known for centuries that in addition to its sweet taste, it also has a beneficial effect on the whole body.
Well chosen – means healthy
Watermelons available as a whole must be thoroughly checked before purchase. First pay attention to the skin – the stripes should be even, without spots and high contrast, with clearly marked colors. A good watermelon should not have any dents or damage on the surface – the hard skin should not bend when pressed with your thumb. A lighter stain on the underside of the fruit is a remnant of the place where the watermelon was lying on the ground. It should be dark yellow – the more intense the colour, the fresher the fruit. This also means that the watermelon contains a valuable lycopene. This important antioxidant reduces the risk of heart attacks and also prevents the development of cancer.
Consumption of watermelons also reduces blood pressure and improves the flexibility of blood vessels thanks to the presence of vitamins A and C, potassium and magnesium. Eat them often and not only in the traditional way. Juicy pieces of watermelon will taste great in the form of a salad with feta cheese, fresh mint and crunchy baking baguette. A light addition to such snacks will also be whole-grain toasted bread.
Fresh and ripe – for different dishes
In order to choose the most tasty fruit, you should also look at the petiole. The greener and more elastic the better. Let’s discard those fruits that have a crispy, dried and brittle petiole. Pay attention to the size as well. It is rare for a small fruit to be ripe inside. It is therefore best to choose medium sized fruit. Weight is also important. Watermelon, which is heavier, will be much tastier – the fruit consists of more than 90% water, so a ripe one must have the right weight. A simple sound test will be helpful – if you knock on the fruit and it makes a deaf, “empty” sound, it will mean that it is fully ripe. – From this selection of fruits we will easily prepare delicious home-made jam, perfect for a fluffy Milk Bun for breakfast. – Don’t forget that watermelon can also be used to make homemade ice cream – just blend its flesh with lime, pour the mass into moulds and put in the freezer. At the end of summer, we can also experiment with the grill and in a few moments prepare sweet snacks. Browned on a grill, full of warm juice, pieces of watermelon will ideally combine with crispy tartlets and melted chocolate or whipped cream.
