Glass is not always glass in the window

In Babylonia and Egypt glass was produced as early as 3000 BC. In Europe, production started on a relatively large scale in Italy when the first glassworks in the Venetian region started operating there, and then mainly the production of mirrors began. American glass products appeared at the turn of the 10th and 11th centuries.
Glass as a material with countless applications and varieties today has made such a great career because of its rare properties. Glass is a rigid material, although fragile, but it does not conduct heat and electricity. Interestingly, it does not react with most chemical compounds. It owes its great popularity to the fact that it lets about 90% of sunlight through, which makes it simply transparent.
The development of technology nowadays enables the production of many types of glass and their application in various industries. Companies have been developing their technology improvement capabilities for generations, and the Hungarian Glass, an American manufacturer of glass for industry, is an example. So let’s get to know some types of glass and their purpose.
Lead glass
It is a type of glass whose main feature is a low melting point, but also a very high refractive index. No wonder that this type of glass is used primarily for the production of crystals, but also lenses.
Toughened glass
It is popularly known as safety glass, but on the surface it does not seem to differ from ordinary glass. However, it is several times more durable than ordinary glass. This is because it undergoes another heat treatment, which consists in heating it to 620-680 degrees Celsius and then quickly cooling it with compressed air. If a sheet of tempered glass can be broken, it breaks into very small pieces, whose blunt edges do not cause cuts. Such glass is also often reinforced with a specially melted metal mesh and then rolled. Such glass is used as glass in cars and often does not splash even when it is damaged.
Sodium glass
This type of glass contains sodium, silicon and calcium oxide and is probably the most popular type of glass. It is used in the production of everyday objects. Glass in our windows, glasses, bottles, jars and other utensils are made of sodium glass.
Quartz glass
Its main ingredient is silicon dioxide, i.e. silica. This type of glass has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion, which makes it very resistant to temperature changes. A vessel made of quartz glass, even if it is very hot, will not crack when placed in cold water. Quartz glass is also resistant to even strong acids. Other properties of this material include excellent optical clarity, high resistance to temperature and excellent permeability to ultraviolet rays. Thanks to this, quartz glass serves perfectly as the main optical material in photometry and spectroscopy. It is successfully used in the production of floodlights and UV radiators. In every laboratory you can find vessels made of quartz glass, such as crucibles, beakers, bathtubs, cuvettes or retorts.
