The furniture accessories market is becoming more and more diversified every year – this is largely due to the wide range of products offered by both domestic and foreign manufacturers. The assortment of hinges, which have recently undergone an extraordinary metamorphosis, is particularly wide.
Furniture fronts decide on the aesthetics of furniture and have a big influence on the final choices made by future users of e.g. kitchen fittings. However, it would be difficult to imagine functional furniture fronts without professional hinges. Most often, however, the customer verifies this practical aspect of the operation of furniture hinges only during their daily use. That is why it is so important to use the offer of reliable manufacturers, whose products guarantee trouble-free operation for many years.
There is something to choose from
There are several types of furniture hinges available on the market. They differ from each other in their construction, area of application, opening angle, as well as the way of placing them in the cabinet door. The most popular of them are angle hinges (with a wide range of opening angles), hinges equipped with self-closing systems and canned hinges – recessed in the plate. In the case of cup hinges, the depth of the cup placement is very important, which enables the hinge to be mounted even in thin chipboards or MDF boards.
One of the most interesting solutions currently available on the market are hinges with negative stroke, designed for internal drawers. Thanks to these hinges it is possible to avoid spacing strips.
It is worth mentioning that a large group of hinges for “special tasks” is also available on the market. This group includes, among others, cylindrical, wing and piston hinges, as well as hinges designed for glass and aluminium frames.
Opening without any problems
When selecting and evaluating furniture hinges, what counts above all is the functionality that guarantees comfortable and, what is equally important, safe use of furniture.
The basic function of furniture hinges is to ensure smooth and trouble-free opening and closing of “doors”. In order to meet this requirement, several parameters must be taken into account. First of all, the hinges must “bear” the weight of the front.
A large furniture front, mounted on inappropriate hinges, will not withstand the test of time and under the influence of weight can lower itself, visibly changing the size of slots, which will affect the overall aesthetics of the door fronts. The user will immediately notice that the gaps between such fronts are no longer perfectly equal and the fronts are not parallel to each other, which spoils the whole impression.
The problem of selecting hinges for appropriate sizes of fronts is particularly important in situations when larger sizes of fronts are gaining in popularity. Designers are more and more eager to use them, while at the same time combining fronts of different sizes and arrangement within the same building.
The functionality of furniture hinges is also manifested in providing the user with the convenience of using furniture. What does this mean in practice? Well, the hinges should have an opening angle adjusted to the location and function of the cabinet. Products available on the market may have an opening angle of up to 165° or even 270°. This ensures easy access to the interior of the furniture and trouble-free use of the contents of the cabinets. The wide opening angle is ideal, for example, for corner cabinets in kitchens, which are installed when space is limited.
