Car covers for winter – the perfect gift for your car
In winter, our car is particularly exposed to harmful external factors: frost, humidity and wind. Investing in the right accessories not only protects your car, but also saves you the hassle of fighting with frozen windows and locks.
Effective protection in winter
Car covers – tarpaulins – are designed to provide comprehensive protection of the car against external factors. First of all, they prevent freezing of windows and locks, but also protect the car from moisture and extend the life of the car body. Although they work best in winter and are most often used, they can also be useful in summer or spring – for example, when the car has to stay longer in a sunny place or we are afraid of hailstorms. For protection we can use tarpaulins for the whole car, half tarpaulins or anti-frost shields. Each of these solutions has some advantages and disadvantages, each also to some extent makes the life of the driver easier.
Canvas, half canvas or frost protection?
The tarpaulin protects the whole car: not only the windows, but also the body and locks. They are also usually sewn in sizes dedicated to specific models of cars, and have strings that make it easier to mount them, even in the wind. However, some people find it problematic to put on such covers and fold them after use. A comprehensive protective cover is a good solution for people who leave their car outside for a long time – especially in winter.
A half-cover usually protects the top of the car by covering the windows. It is usually faster to put on than a classic tarpaulin. It effectively protects windows from frost or freezing, but also (if made of appropriate materials) can protect against UV radiation and protect the car from excessive heat. Thanks to this, it is a good solution not only in winter. However, this type of product does not protect the door: it is best to choose it when the doors in our car rarely freeze.
Antifreeze shields are the cheapest and fastest solution if you only want to protect your windscreen against freezing and frost. It saves the time needed to scrape snow and ice off the windscreen and protects it from scratching. This is a practical and quick solution, good for people who leave their car outside for longer, once in a while or often organize shorter stops, during which it is not worthwhile to protect the whole car.
What should I pay attention to?
When choosing car covers for winter, you should first of all pay attention to the material they are made of. The cheapest tarpaulins are usually made of thin polyester. Better, they are made of several layers of materials or are made using materials such as polypropylene fleece. More expensive models are waterproof and effectively protect against snow, frost, but also dust and bird droppings. An additional layer of bottom layer placed in better tarpaulins ensures that the car paintwork will not be scratched.
It is also important that the cover is properly matched to the specific car model, especially the size of the body. Only a tarpaulin of the right size guarantees effective protection, comfortable fastening and reliable durability. It should be a little longer than the car, so that after mounting it is not easily damaged. At the same time, however, too large canvas can be pulled by the wind.
Useful car accessories
Although a car cover is the best gift for a winter car, other car accessories may also be useful. First of all, windscreen scrapers, liquids that help to get rid of ice on the windows, and defrosters for doors and locks. Neglecting this type of shopping we are exposed to a nasty surprise when the temperature drops rapidly – it may turn out that not only will we not be able to drive away from the parking lot, but we will not even get to the frozen car.
What is the cost of a tarpaulin?
The price of products designed to protect the car in winter varies depending on their type and quality. For example, a full “classic” tarpaulin in a shop dedicated to the sale of car accessories, costs USD 130. The tarpaulin is made of a material showing waterproof properties and comes in several sizes (adapted to specific types of cars). Half tarpaulin “HALF” made of three-layer material (so well protected against frost and UV) is the cost of about 45 USD. Prices for windscreen or windscreen and sidewall protectors range from approximately $25 to $50.
